Gear model in AutoCAD

This blog explains step-by-step how to create this gear-like drawing in AutoCAD, including arcs, radii, angles, and detailed dimensions.

Step-by-Step Guide to Create the Drawing in AutoCAD

  1. Set Up the Drawing Environment

    • Open AutoCAD and set your workspace to Drafting & Annotation.
    • Use the Units command to set the units to Decimal with precision of 4 decimal places.
  2. Draw the Basic Circle (Outer Profile)

    • Use the Circle command:
      • Type C and press Enter.
      • Specify the center point as (0,0) and the radius as 2.125.
  3. Create the Tooth Shape (Outer Gear Edges)

    • Use the Polar Array method for repeating teeth:
      • Draw a single tooth first:
        • Use the Line command to draw a line from the circle edge at an angle of 10°.
        • Repeat for the opposite side at 10° using Mirror or by snapping to the centerline.
      • Use the Trim tool to clean excess lines.
    • Use Polar Array to duplicate the teeth:
      • Type ARRAYPOLAR, select the tooth, and set the center as (0,0).
      • Define the number of teeth based on the required spacing.
  4. Draw the Spokes

    • Create four spokes as shown using the Arc and Line tools:
      • Start by drawing a centerline (horizontal and vertical lines through the origin).
      • Use the Arc tool:
        • Start the arc at R1.7500 radius.
        • Adjust the span angle to visually match the drawing.
      • Mirror the arcs along centerlines for symmetry.
  5. Add the Small Circles and Holes

    • Draw the small inner circles:
      • Use the Circle command:
        • Center: (0,0) and radius: 0.2500 and 0.1300.
    • To add a hole or center circle:
      • Specify the diameter using Ø0.4000 (convert to radius).
  6. Add Angular and Radial Dimensions

    • Use the Angular dimension tool to add:
      • 10° and 20° angles for teeth and spokes.
    • Use the Radius tool to add:
      • R2.1250, R2.0000, R1.7500, and R0.1300.
    • Use the Diameter tool for Ø0.4000.
  7. Adjust Line Weights and Colors

    • Use the Layer properties to assign different colors and line weights:
      • Red: Main outline.
      • Green: Centerlines and guides.
      • Blue: Dimensions.
  8. Finalize the Drawing

    • Add center marks using the Centerline tool.
    • Ensure all dimensions are clearly visible.
    • Save and export the drawing as required.
