In this blog post, I’ll guide you step-by-step to create the irregular polygon with angles and dimensions as shown in the reference drawing using AutoCAD. It’s a great exercise to practice your line, dimension, and angle tools!

Step-by-Step Guide to Create the Irregular Polygon

  1. Set Up Your Drawing Workspace

    • Open AutoCAD and ensure you're in the Drafting & Annotation workspace.
    • Use the UN command to set units:
      • Type: Decimal, Precision: 0.0.

  2. Draw the Base Horizontal Line

    • Use the Line tool (L) and draw the first line:
      • 14 units horizontally from left to right.

  3. Draw the Angular Segments

    • Use the Polar Tracking feature:
      • Enable Polar from the bottom panel.
      • Use angle increments such as 90°, 150°, 155°, 111°, etc., to match the drawing.
    • Steps to Create Each Line:
      • From the end of the base line, draw subsequent lines as follows:
        • Line of 9 units at an angle of 155°.
        • Line of 9 units at an angle of 90°.
        • Line of 8 units at an angle of 121°.
        • Line of 9 units at an angle of 150°.
        • Continue this process, carefully matching each segment and its respective angle.

  4. Use the Angle Tool to Verify Angles

    • After drawing all segments, use the Angular Dimension tool to verify:
      • Select two connecting lines to display angles like 125°, 155°, 111°, 90°, etc.
    • Place the angle dimensions inside or outside the shape, as shown in the reference.

  5. Add Dimensions

    • Use the Linear Dimension tool:
      • For horizontal and diagonal lengths: 14, 9, 8 units.
    • Ensure all dimensions are neat and aligned for clarity.

  6. Final Touches

    • Clean up the drawing using the Trim (TR) or Erase (E) tool if needed. 
    • Save your drawing using the SAVEAS command and export as PDF if required.
